We were appointed by Hightown Housing Association to develop this brownfield site for affordable housing.
The development provides 49 new homes for affordable rent and shared ownership, comprising 31 houses and 18 apartments.
The site is in the High Town area of Luton, a sustainable location, close to amenities, where there is a high demand for new housing, characterised by its Victorian terraced houses. The accommodation created is arranged in terraces, predominantly two storey, increasing to two-and-half and three storey for the larger houses and apartments. The new terraced housing reinforces and continues the existing street frontage to Charles Street.
The scale and materials respond to the context of the neighbouring Victorian streets. The predominant brick is the ‘Luton Grey’ found throughout the older parts of the town. To introduce variety contrasting bricks, a cream and red stock brick, have been used, both of which are common in the locality. Brick patterning and corbelling have also been incorporated into the design, complimenting the polychromatic Victorian facades of High Town
