We were commissioned by B3Living to undertake work to redevelop this former trucking depot site, bordering the New River in Hoddesdon for affordable homes providing a full service from feasibility to completion. The scheme provides a total of 60 new homes, comprising of a mixture of apartments and houses for affordable rent and shared ownership, all of which were designed to Nationally Described Space Standards.

The site was identified as part of the Essex Road Gateway Development, together with road realignment and a new bridge. The site also neighbours a previous project of ours at New River Close.

Whilst the site was industrial in nature, to the south, there was the opportunity to develop an attractive river frontage. The existing vehicular access point was retained, and a new pedestrian/cycle access created. Terraces of accommodation are arranged along these routes, overlooking a central public open amenity space and the New River frontage.

Striking gable frontages to the apartment block overlook the river with dramatic effect when approached from the south and east. Multi-buff stock brick was used throughout the development combined with slate-grey roof tiles and contrasting dark grey fibre-cement weatherboarding.

The project was nominated for an Inside Housing award and won Best Commercial Project at the Hertfordshire Association of Architecture awards in 2022.
