We were appointed for architectural design services by Hightown Housing Association in prepare for this 100% affordable homes development in the Bushey Green Belt. The development provides 55 new dwellings, in the form of apartments and houses. The accommodation comprises: 23 apartments, and 32 houses, which are arranged in predominantly two storey terraces, with some increasing to 2 ½ and 3 storeys. The main building materials are multi-stock red brick; grey and green weatherboarding; white render; multi-red plain tiles and artificial slate.
The development represents a limited and contained infilling of the settlement edge, on partly previously developed land, between other residential sites. The site is contained by a natural boundary formed by a mature hedgerow, trees and ditch establishing a new regularised boundary with the Green Belt.
The proposed development took into consideration the character and genius-loci of the site, and the scale and massing are sympathetic and appropriate to the location.
