Royal Liberty is a successful school providing an excellent education for boys aged between 11-16 within the area of Romford. The school was founded in 1921 within the Grounds of the Grade II* listed Hare Hall, an 18th Century house built for J.D. Wallinger. Vincent and Gorbing adapted the school to provide and additional 1 form of entry in 2021. To allow the 1 form of entry expansion a new Classroom and Sports Hall block has been designed to the western side of Hare Hall.
The design of the new building has used the principle of the ‘Piano Nobile’ to create visual interest over the elevations. At ground floor, toilets and changing areas are positioned adjacent to the Sports Hall to create the appearance of a reduced height floor on elevation. Smaller windows punctuate this floor to respond to the privacy required and bring a reduced amount of daylight.
The teaching spaces at first floor benefit from larger window openings to maximise day-lighting and benefit view out to the playing fields and the adjacent Hare Hall.
