In September 2014 approval was given, by the Department for Education, to The Ongar Academy Trust to set up a Free School in Ongar. The vision of The Ongar Academy Trust is to provide a 4FE (800 pupil school including sixth form) with a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) focus.
Temporary planning consent (2 years) was granted to provide accommodation for 2 academic years (2015-2016 and 2016-2017) until the permanent accommodation was completed. In September 2015 98 pupils were admitted to the Academy the majority of whom lived in Ongar or its rural hinterland.
A detailed planning application was submitted to Epping Forest District Council for the permanent construction of the 4FE secondary school including sports hall, associated access (vehicular and pedestrian), removal of trees, car parking, cycle storage, hard surface landscaping, soft landscaping, all weather floodlit sports surface (MUGA), surface water attenuation and associated development. This application was approved on 20th May 2016 and the school opened in September 2017.
Vincent and Gorbing was commissioned by Kier Construction Ltd on behalf of The Ongar Academy Trust to prepare and submit the detailed planning application for the development and later to discharge the planning conditions.
