University of Hertfordshire identified the need for a new Learning Zone, on their 2020 Vision estates masterplan. This project forms part of the £20m initial phase of the 2020 Vision works.
The scheme comprised demolition of various single-storey elements, which adjoin the existing Prince Edward Hall building and creation of a new ground level reception for the Campus, together with a new Learning Zone and café. Purpose of the Learning Zone is to facilitate informal learning by individuals and groups. Some of the new facilities are housed in a ‘Granite box’ which was ‘inserted’ into the existing building structure on a juxtaposing plane.
The works included extensive landscaping, to provide a new focus to the main entrance and to the front area of the campus. Re-elevating the frontage of various existing buildings was also included, together with a new external heritage walkway.
This scheme has won RIBA and RICS awards as well as commendations by other organisations.
